Fuel Cells Generators

Fuel cell generator for Hydrogen

Fuel Cell Cooling Solutions by THERMOGYM

All fuel cells require cooling. Let’s explore the different types and how THERMOGYM provides solutions for all of them.

How Fuel Cells Work:
Fuel cells operate similarly to batteries but don’t run down or need recharging. They produce electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes – an anode (negative) and a cathode (positive) – separated by an electrolyte.

In a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell:
1. Hydrogen fuel is fed to the anode, and air to the cathode.
2. A catalyst separates hydrogen atoms into protons and electrons.
3. Electrons travel through an external circuit, creating an electric current.
4. Protons migrate through the electrolyte to the cathode.
5. At the cathode, protons reunite with oxygen and electrons, producing water and heat.

Fuel Cell Generators:
A fuel cell is part of a larger system called a fuel cell generator. Multiple cells can form a fuel cells generator. These systems generate significant heat and require efficient cooling solutions.

THERMOGYM’s Expertise:
Our team of experts specializes in solving cooling challenges for fuel cell systems:
– We handle various cooling liquids at different temperatures.
– We design compact and efficient cooling solutions.
– We provide heat exchangers (HEX) for all fuel cell types.

Key Point: Typically, 1 kW of cooling is required for each kW of power produced.

Contact THERMOGYM to define your required heat exchanger for any fuel cell generator type.

Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM)

PEM Fuel Cell Generators and Electrolysers: A Powerful Combination for Grid Balance and Seasonal Peaks In the pursuit of a sustainable and reliable energy future, the integration of renewable energy sources into power grids presents both opportunities and challenges. One of the most promising solutions to address these challenges is the combination of Proton Exchange […]
Direct Methanol fuel cell

Direct-methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC)

Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs): How Thermogym can help Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) represent an established yet highly relevant technology within the fuel cell industry. While not always at the forefront of large-scale energy production, their unique advantages make them an ideal choice for specific, specialized applications. DMFCs excel in situations requiring low power […]

Alkaline Fuel Cells

While they may look the same Alkaline fuel cells are fundamentally different from Alkaline Electorlyzers. You cannot reverse the flow and get energy from Hydrogen and Oxygen in an alkaline electrolyzer. These use KOH which is not pleasant to work with. THERMOGYM with years of experience with many type of stainless steels can provide heat […]

Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells (PFAC)

One of the more interesting stack ideas for fuel cells is phosphoric acid based units. AS all fuel cells these require special materials and the cooling of machines is a bit tricky!  Thermgym can really help out here. Comparison of Fuel Cell Types: PAFC, MCFC, AFC, and SOFC Characteristic PAFC MCFC AFC SOFC Operating Temperature […]
Molten carbonate fuel cell

Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells

Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC) are very  efficient types of fuel cells, as they work at over 650 Degrees C. Thermogym are experts in high temperature stainless steel and thus we can provide all types of heat exchangers for these temperatures. Here are some links for those that are interested in more information, these […]

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Solid oxide fuel cells are basically the same as solid oxide electrolysers! SOFC based machines have the advantage of being both fuel cells and electrolysers. During times of extra renewable energy they can create hydrogen. During dunkelflaute they can then be reverse cycled to put energy back into the grid.  This is a huge advantage […]

Combined Heat And Power Fuel Cells (CHP)

The creation of electricity from a fuel cell is an exothermic reaction.  This means that heat is always created.  In most systems this heat is then dissipated to the air.  In many cases and especially in cold climates, what would happen if you took this heat and used it for heating buildings and homes? This […]

Regenerative Or Reversible Fuel Cells

Regenerative Fuel Cells: A Promising Energy Solution for Areas Far from the Grid Thermogym solves the problem of off grid cooling for these types of systems. Energy storage and transportation are crucial for operations in areas far from the grid. Among various sustainable power sources, regenerative fuel cells stand out as one of the most […]
